At ThempleChild Foundation, we believe children and young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow, but active participants in the families, schools and communities shaping society today. Our work is centred on advancing their wellbeing, rights and opportunities, particularly where poverty, educational exclusion, limited access to healthcare, family disruption, neglect and other social or economic barriers affect their ability to thrive.
We work alongside children, young people, families, schools, communities and partner organizations through outreach, education, practical support, advocacy and community-based initiatives. While responding to immediate needs is an important part of our work, we also seek to understand the wider circumstances affecting children’s health, education, safety and development.
Our approach is grounded in dignity, participation, collaboration and respect for the strengths already present within the communities we serve. We believe meaningful support begins with listening, recognizes the experiences and perspectives of children and young people, and brings communities, professionals and institutions together where broader or specialized support is required.

We envision a society where children and young people, regardless of their background or circumstances, have meaningful opportunities to grow, learn, participate and thrive with dignity.
Across Nigeria, many children, young people and families experience interconnected barriers related to poverty, educational exclusion, limited access to healthcare and social resources, abuse, neglect, family disruption and other forms of disadvantage. Some young people may also experience homelessness or street involvement, substance use, exploitation, violence or contact with the justice system, often alongside other unmet social and developmental needs.
We envision communities in which children’s rights and voices are respected, families are supported, schools provide safe and accessible environments for learning, and young people experiencing difficult circumstances can access appropriate support, protection and opportunities to participate meaningfully in decisions affecting their wellbeing and future.
Our vision is therefore not only to respond when children experience hardship, but to contribute to stronger families, communities and support systems that create opportunities for children and young people to flourish.
Our mission is to promote the wellbeing, rights and development of children and young people through community-based support, education, advocacy and collaborative intervention.
We seek to connect practical assistance with longer-term opportunities by working alongside children, families, schools, communities, professionals and partner organizations. Our work recognizes that challenges affecting children and young people are often interconnected and that meaningful responses may require attention to education, health, protection, family circumstances, community resources and the broader social and institutional environments in which children grow.
We pursue this mission through several interconnected areas of work.
ThempleChild Foundation recognizes children and young people as individuals with rights, voices, strengths and evolving capacities. Guided by child-rights principles reflected in Nigerian law, including the Child Rights Act 2003, we seek to translate these principles into practical support within families, schools and communities.
- Dignity and Protection:Promoting children’s safety, dignity and their right to live free from abuse, exploitation, neglect and degrading treatment, while supporting appropriate connections to protection and professional services where serious concerns arise.
- Education and Participation:
Supporting access to education and opportunities for children and young people to have a meaningful voice in matters affecting their development and future.
- Family and Community Support: Working alongside parents, caregivers and communities in strengthening environments that support children’s wellbeing, while recognizing that some young people may experience family disconnection or circumstances in which additional protection and support are required.
- Health & Wellbeing: Promoting access to reliable health information, awareness and appropriate support, particularly where social or economic barriers affect access to care.
- Access to Support & Representation: Helping connect children and young people experiencing serious social, protection or rights-related concerns with appropriate community, professional, legal or other specialized support where this falls beyond the Foundation’s own capacity.
- Recreation & Development:
Recognizing play, recreation, creativity, social connection and personal development as important parts of childhood and adolescence. Our commitment extends beyond providing assistance. We seek to work in ways that respect dignity, encourage participation and recognize the strengths and experiences of children, families and communities.
ThempleChild Foundation seeks to:
- Improve access to education, health information and supportive resources for children and young people experiencing social or economic barriers.
- Promote children’s rights, confidence and participation, supporting young people to have a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their lives.
- Strengthen child and youth protection and access to appropriate support by helping identify serious concerns and connecting children, young people and families with relevant professional, community and institutional resources.
- Reduce barriers to education by supporting children at risk of educational exclusion and encouraging sustained participation in learning.
- Strengthen families and communities by working collaboratively with parents, caregivers, schools and communities to identify priorities and develop appropriate responses.
- Build effective partnerships and support networks across education, healthcare, civil society, social services, community organizations and other institutions to strengthen child protection, health, wellbeing and youth development.
Our long-term aim is to contribute to communities where children and young people can exercise their rights, develop their strengths and participate fully in their communities.
- School & Community Outreach: We work with schools and communities to support children and young people facing barriers to education, wellbeing and participation. Our outreach includes educational support, mentorship, child-rights and health education, family engagement and practical assistance, guided by priorities identified with the communities we serve.
- Child, Youth & Family Support: We support children, young people and families experiencing social or economic barriers through educational materials, hygiene and menstrual-health supplies, food, clothing, mentorship, family engagement and connections to appropriate services. Our work has also brought us into contact with young people experiencing family disconnection, educational exclusion, street involvement and other circumstances that place their safety, wellbeing or rights at risk. Where needs extend beyond the Foundation’s role or expertise, we work to connect young people and families with appropriate professional and community-based support. Beyond immediate assistance, we seek opportunities to strengthen educational participation, protection and longer-term wellbeing
- Health Access & Community Health Education: We collaborate with healthcare professionals and community partners to improve access to health information and support for children and families facing barriers to care. Our initiatives have included education on sickle cell disease, genotype and reproductive health, as well as helping families connect with available resources and appropriate professional support.
- Child Rights, Protection & Advocacy: We support efforts to protect the rights and wellbeing of children and young people experiencing neglect, exploitation, family disconnection, educational exclusion and other circumstances that may leave them without adequate support or representation. Where appropriate, we collaborate with families, community organizations, civil-society groups, social-service professionals and other relevant partners to help identify concerns, connect young people with specialized support and advocate for appropriate attention to their circumstances.
- Partnership & Community Collaboration: We work with schools, families, community leaders, healthcare professionals, civil-society organizations, public institutions and other professional partners to strengthen support for children and young people. Through partnership, public education, referrals and advocacy, we help connect children and families with resources and promote greater attention to education, health, protection, rights and wellbeing.
- Listen Before Acting: We listen to children, young people, families and communities and seek to understand their experiences and locally identified priorities before developing responses.
- Work Collaboratively:
We bring together families, communities, schools, professionals and partner organizations where different perspectives, expertise and resources can strengthen a response.
- Respect Dignity & Participation:
We recognize children, young people and families as active participants whose experiences, choices, strengths and perspectives matter. We seek to avoid reducing young people to the difficulties, circumstances or labels through which they may first come to our attention.
Look Beyond the Immediate Need:We respond to immediate needs while also considering the wider educational, health, family, social and economic circumstances affecting children and young people.
- Know The Limit of Our Role: We recognize that some circumstances require expertise, authority or services beyond the Foundation’s capacity. Where specialized medical, legal, social or other professional support is needed, we seek appropriate partnerships, referrals and connections rather than working beyond our role.
Our work is rooted in direct engagement with children, young people, families, schools and communities. Through school and community outreach, ThempleChild Foundation has supported education, youth wellbeing, health awareness, rights education, practical needs and connections to appropriate services while working alongside educators, healthcare professionals, volunteers, civil-society organizations and community partners.
Our activities have varied according to the circumstances encountered – from school and rural-community outreach to health-access initiatives, mentorship, family engagement and advocacy for young people experiencing more complex social or protection concerns. Across these settings, we seek to listen carefully, work collaboratively and connect immediate needs with appropriate longer-term support.
